Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) uses art to teach critical thinking, communication skills and interactions with peers, and visual literacy. It was developed by Abigail Housen and Philip Tenawine. The teacher becomes a facilitator as a piece of artwork is displayed for the students to observe. The artwork should link to curriculum ideas. The teacher asks open-ended questions (What's going on? What do you see that makes you say that?) so the students find the meaning behind the chosen piece of artwork. This is not strictly for an art class! This strategy can be used in any classroom.
