Service Learning is a method of teaching that utilizes classroom instruction to benefit a need, or needs, of the community. Students may be presented with an actual topic or real life problem, or they may identify one on their own. This topic/problem will be researched and the students will actively participate in authentic civic service to bring about a positive change towards solving the chosen issue. This method would be presented by:
- Step 1: Preparation - Students will need to know what service learning is and what the goal of the method should be. They investigate a community need that aligns to the curriculum and analyze what can be done.
- Step 2: Action - Students research possible solutions for the need. They develop a plan, design a course of action, and implement the plan with the necessary people and support (students, teachers, community members, etc.).
- Step 3: Evaluation - Students analyze the results of their plan. What skills have they developed or gained? What have they learned about themselves, others, and their community? What changes have they brought about? What worked well? What didn't?
- Step 4: Celebration - Student should celebrate their accomplishments and the differences they have made. Inform the community through local newspapers and television. Have an awards ceremony or dedication at the school attended by the school, families, and community members.
- *The most important element of service learning is REFLECTION. Students should reflect during and after each step. They make keep a journal, hold group discussions, take photographs, create presentations, etc. Reflection keeps the students conscious of the experience and will aid them in responding to any changes that need to be made or complications that arise. Service Learning is a cycle and reflection must take place throughout.*
